This talk will give a brief history of ARM over the last 30+ years from a personal and somewhat nostalgic perspective. It will trace ARM’s roots right back to the inception of Acorn in 1978 and outline the motivation for building the first ARM (Acorn RISC Machine) in 1985 and the spin-out of ARM Ltd as a separate company in 1990. It will then go on to highlight some key milestones and products in ARM’s history and then finish up with a sneak preview of some exciting Blue Sky research.

John Biggs has been involved with Arm developments since 1986 and co-founded Arm Ltd. in 1990. After a number of years working as a VLSI design engineer, he went on to form Arm’s Design Methodology Group in 1995. John is a Distinguished Engineer working in Arm’s research group with an interest in the development of advanced methodologies for the low-power deployment of synthesisable Arm IP. He is currently working on "PlasticARM" a blue sky research project to develop low-cost microcontrollers using state of the art thin-film transistors on flexible plastic substrates. John holds a BSc in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of Manchester and is currently chair of the IEEE1801 (UPF) workgroup.
