What we'll do
Study group objective: Basic data analysis in Python, getting familiar with Python data analysis packages


We will kick off this study group with an IN-PERSON Intro to Python session. The following several weeks we will follow along with a FREE ONLINE course “Intro to Data Analysis” offered by Udacity: https://www.udacity.com/course/intro-to-data-analysis--ud170

Online Course will be held weekly on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm

Python language (basic familiarity recommended); covers basic python packages - numpy, pandas, matplotlib

6 weeks for the online course + 2-4 weeks for the project

Plus optional final project at the end (they give options to choose couple of datasets from Kaggle, there is no evaluation though since the course is free)

Install: Anaconda Python 2.7 (It comes bundled with jupyter notebook)

Deadline for becoming a mentor: We’re looking to have a list of mentors by end of Feb., but don’t hesitate to contact us after the start of the study group as we are always looking for more help! If you are interested we are having an in person meetup, it would be great if you can make it.

Duration/time commitment of the study group: Wednesday evenings online; starting in early March: 6 weeks for the online course + 2-4 weeks for the project

Mentor Expectations - some but not all are required:

Have intermediate familiarity with Python and data analysis packages (numpy, pandas, matplotlib)

Familiarity with data analysis/science process (cleaning, investigating, presenting findings, etc)

Attend one or more online hour-long study group sessions once a week (Wednesdays at 6:30pm) -- we are flexible on the number of weeks, just let us know what availability you have

Aid in answering any questions that study group attendees might have on data analysis or Python

Help brainstorm analysis and project ideas

Review and critique group projects and presentations toward the end of the study group
