Update 2/14/2012
We're looking forward to tomorrow evening, and hope you all are too!  Here's what we have planned as a rough agenda:

6:00-6:15 - Find a seat
6:15-6:20 - Brief welcome & introduction
6:20-6:40 - Adam @ Cloudera
6:45-7:05 - Ted @ MapR
7:10-7:30 - Philip @ Hadapt
7:30-8:30 - Open networking etc.
8:30 - Doors close

See you all tomorrow!

What better way to kick off the new year (albeit a bit belatedly) than with a Hadoop MeetUp?  We've gotten support from Cloudera, Fidelity, Hadapt, and MapR for this kick-off event.  The agenda we've lined up is geared more towards the beginner Hadoop user, but there will certainly be experts in attendance if you're looking to strike up a more technical discussion.  We've lined up three 15-20-minute talks (plus Q&A):

Ted Dunning, Chief Application Architect at MapR - Ted will be giving an overview of machine learning within Hadoop.  Bio: http://linkd.in/xOO0ra

Adam Smieszny, Systems Engineer at Cloudera - Adam will discuss how Hadoop fits into existing data management and analysis workflows.  Bio: http://linkd.in/yJlQmP

Philip Wickline, Chief Technology Officer at Hadapt - Philip will give a high-level discussion about the differences between HBase and Hive, and about transactional versus analytical workloads more generally speaking, and dive into the systems required for each type of workload.  Bio: http://linkd.in/AewGIw

The kind folks over at Fidelity have offered up conference room space.  Cloudera, Hadapt, and MapR will be providing food (of the sandwich or pizza variety) and drinks (of the soda and beer variety).  We'll kick things off at a bit past 6pm, run these three lectures until around 7:30, and then have an hour or so to drink beer and chat.
You'll notice that there is a cutoff for RSVPing.  Fidelity has some security procedures that we need to follow, specifically (a) a guest list a few days in advance and (b) photo ID for each attendee.  It would be a shame to have to turn someone away because they're not on the list we give to Fidelity, so please sign up if you intend to come.
Please feel free to contact Reed Shea at [masked] with any questions.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Edit 1/31/2012
Glad to see the substantial interest in this event!  We have two important updates:
- In order to be allowed in to Fidelity's building, as mentioned, we need a guest list and everyone will need photo ID.  We therefore need your first and last name on that guest list.  If you're not comfortable putting your full name on your MeetUp profile, that's fine - just be sure to email [masked] with your full name.
- We have a capacity limit of around 220 people, so we may have to cap attendance if we get that many RSVPs.  (As much as I'd hate to have to turn anyone away, this seems like a pretty good problem for the MeetUp group to have!)

Update 2/9/2012
We've reached our capacity limit, factoring in some anecdotal evidence of meetup event yields.  We have 160 seats, so assuming ~75% of the RSVPs attend, it should be a fairly full house.  There is also standing room.
Please RSVP if you're interested in attending; there are still a couple of dozen of people who've indicated that they'd like to come but haven't sent me their full names.  If, by Monday, we haven't gotten names, we will open up those slots and alert the next people in line.
